" A Graaf GM200 amp that I stripped down to chassis level, had repainted at the local Ferrari dealer (they are originally painted at the Ferrari factory in Modena), and reassembled myself.  If you have never heard a Graaf amp before, there is currently a GM20 for sale in the Mr. Valve For Sale section be warned that you will never be satisfied with another amplifier! I still have my Nuforce Ref 9V2 SE monoblocks and they sound too dull to listen to anymore"


Goran Racic shares with us his beauties.

The  807 SE amplifier a la Gordon Rankin's from "Sound Practices 02/93".  Goran was busy building it for the last 3 or 4 years.

  • Speakers are 2300 mm tall full exponential horns, mouth opening is 810x810 mm, 3300 mm along the volute, one Lowther PM2A driver each (with some silver wiring & pyramidal foam inside the compression chamber)
  • Turntable is good old Garrard 401 with SME V Mk II tonearm, Dynavector Carat 17DIII & silver van den Hull wiring (new solid wood plinth is waiting for it in Durban)
  • Phono-preamp is GALA AUDIO (from my home country) valve unit (Siemens CCa in input & ECC83 in buffer stage), plus Fidelity Research DIII MC transformer
  • Amplifier is GALA AUDIO Single Ended 211, 20 W per channel (Siemens CCa input/ General Electric 12AX7 driver / General Electric VT4C/211 output)
  • CD player is Jolida JD 100, with RCA 12AX7 Command in output stage
  • DSP is Behringer 2496 Ultracurve Pro
  • Tuner is Jolida JD 402, with RCA 12AX7 output for FM & Zaerix 6201 for AM (all the valves except VT4C in the amp thanks to Wim's efforts)
  • lot & lot of silver wiring in between....

Whole thing took me about 8 years to put together & cost about the same as a brand new Toyota Corolla (midrange model), as well (talking about dedication to the cause).

" The amplifier is based on Mikael Abdellahs original single-ended triode design that was later modified by Alex Gendrano, and appeared on  I further modified the circuit by adding three sets of source inputs that are selectable by means of a three-way rotary switch, a 555 time based monostable mutivibrator circuit to introduce a 45 second delay on the application of B+, and a three-way rotary switch that facilitates switching the mode of operation between triode, ultra-linear and pentode. The circuit uses a 5U4-GB twin diode power rectifier, a 6N1P dual audio triode for the pre-amplifier stage, and two KT88s, one for each channel for the main amplification. I have used a Hammond 374BX power transformer and a pair of Hammond 1628SEA audio output transformers. Mains ripple is filtered by means of a Pi filter consisting of a Solen 10mF polypropylene capacitor, a Hammond 193J 10H choke, and a JJ 100mF electrolytic capacitor. The B+ supplies to the 6N1P are further filtered by means of two Hammond 155H 5H chokes and two Solen 10mF polypropylene capacitors.

The build took me ten months to complete, as I had to source many of the components overseas, and working with aluminium further slowed down progress due to its difficulty (and my lack of experience with working with the metal!) I run the amp on a pair of Klipsch RB51 bookshelf speakers with horn tweeters and an efficiency of 92db @ 2.83V/1m. I am guessing that I get around 10 to 12W in triode mode, slightly more in ultra-linear mode and around 18 watts in pentode mode. The sound of the amplifier through these speakers is absolutely beautiful! I prefer the sound of the triode mode as it has the best dynamic range and soundstage, with very natural highs, middles and lows. The ultra-linear mode has marginally more power, however lacks a bit  in soundstage. In pentode mode the amplifier pushes out the greatest output, however it lacks soundstage and dynamic range, and the highs sound very bright with accentuated sibilance.

Overall I am extremely pleased with the amplifier, considering that it was first valve amplifier build. I have now been bitten by the valve bug and there is no turning back now! "


Chris Templer - Surrounded by beauties.  Will there ever be a dull moment??

"HiFi has been a hobby of mine for around 50 years long enough for me to giggle at the appellationaudiophile.  No offence intended to the very serious, but high fidelity is still the name of the game.  Over the years I have gone through various amps, turntables, cartridges, tape decks and CD players sincethey were foisted on us. As to speakers I am almost a virgin, having lived with Goodman Axioms for40 years and only discovering the Tannoy Dual Concentric relatively lately. Never having owned aspeaker smaller than a 12 in a big cabinet, made the transition to 15 Tannoys in even larger boxes thenext logical step (Averroes defined logic as "the tool for distinguishing between the true and the false"and I am sticking to that as it suits my brand of false reality). Being male, bigger is always better, except when it clashes with Triode Theory.

I once visited the SABC Transmitting Station at Bloemendal where the first stage driver in the audiochain was one channel of a Leak point one amp (built by Siemens) into a 40Kw second stage driverinto the final 250Kw audio to modulate the 550Kw RF stage. Two points from this last 1. The Leakoutput could be boosted to 250Kw and remain relatively undistorted and 2. Bigger is Better!

I am the proud owner of a pair of single ended mono block amps with 2 X 300B's in parallel. Thesewere built by Alan Hobkirk using Cerafine silver foil caps and silver wire throughout. Around 12 watts.

Valves by Mr Valve. Also used is a Tact SADI semi-digital amp based on sand (silica).

Jolida CD player with 2 X 12AX7 valves (new Electro-Harmonix valves thanks to Sanita at Mr Valveto be fitted tonight).  Turntable by me and it works better than it looks. Marbles are there for the weight!

Spindle diameter 20mm X 250mm long. Bushings are from Vesconite and the whole lot running in oil.

Tone arm is an Eminent ET-2.5 with air bearing.

Cartridge is a Blue Angel Mantis byAndre Hanekom in Cape Town.

Speakers are what I call a Double Autograph 2 off 15 Tannoy Dual Concentric drivers in a horncabinet. Each cabinet has over 65 panels. I estimate the sensitivity to be around 100dB / 1 watt.

Cabinet dimensions 1.85M high 850mm wide and750mm deep. Not shown are three sets of Ribbonspeakers that rest on top for extra boost in the mid rangeand treble with a super tweeter.

The organ used to be in the same room but has now been sold.

The picture of the organ gives one some of an idea as to how completely stupid an audio nut can be inpursuit of his (her or it's) hobby. If I mention that I had a vague idea of learning to play the thing when I bought it.........

To play the bottom 2 octaves of a large organ requires a sub-woofer. None of your piddley little anemicjobs that taper off at 20Hz (main cabinets go down there), the audio nut mentioned above had to build one that goes down to 8Hz. At the right volume. Picture a square tube 440 on a side and 5.2 meters longwith 3 X 15 speakers mounted on one end and a bit of stuffing in the other and drive with 350 Mosfetwatts.

I don't know if I should laugh at myself or book into an asylum for the terminally demented but there is never a dull moment in hifi."
